What Is an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every issue with braces or aligners requires immediate attention, but some situations do need professional care to prevent discomfort or complications. Orthodontic emergencies can result from accidents, eating certain foods, or normal wear and tear on your appliances.

True emergencies include situations that cause significant pain, trauma to the mouth, or damage that could affect your treatment progress. If you’re experiencing severe discomfort or injury, contact us right away at (610) 935-1547.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies and What to Do

Loose or Broken Bracket

Brackets can become loose or detach from your teeth if you bite into hard or sticky foods, or after an injury. While this isn’t always painful, it can slow down your treatment if not addressed.

What to do:

  • Leave the bracket in place if it’s still attached to the wire
  • Apply orthodontic wax to prevent irritation
  • Call our office to schedule a repair appointment – we’ll often see you the same day

Poking or Protruding Wire

Wires can shift out of place as your teeth move, causing them to poke into your cheeks, gums, or lips. This is one of the most common concerns we see.

What to do:

  • Try gently pushing the wire back into place using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab
  • Cover the end of the wire with orthodontic wax for temporary relief
  • If you can’t reposition it or the irritation persists, contact us immediately

Wire Out of Bracket or Tube

Sometimes the archwire can slip out of the bracket or back tube, especially as your teeth begin to align.

What to do:

  • Use tweezers to gently guide the wire back into place
  • If that doesn’t work, apply wax and call our office
  • We’ll get you in quickly to secure the wire properly

General Soreness or Discomfort

It’s completely normal to experience some soreness for a few days after getting braces or following an adjustment appointment. Your mouth is adapting to the appliances and your teeth are beginning to move.

What to do:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed
  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days
  • Rinse with warm salt water to soothe tender gums
  • The discomfort should subside within 3-5 days

Lost or Broken Aligner

If you lose or damage your Invisalign aligners, it can disrupt your treatment timeline.

What to do:

  • If you’ve just moved to a new set, try wearing the previous set temporarily
  • Contact our office immediately so we can order a replacement or advise you on the next steps
  • As a Platinum Invisalign Provider, we have the expertise to get you back on track quickly

Loose Band or Spacer

Bands and spacers can occasionally come loose, especially when eating sticky foods.

What to do:

  • If a spacer falls out close to your next appointment, it’s usually okay to wait
  • If a band comes loose, save it and bring it to your appointment
  • Call us to determine if you need to come in sooner

Injury to Lips, Cheeks, or Tongue

If your braces cause a cut or sore inside your mouth, it’s important to keep the area clean to prevent infection.

What to do:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day
  • Apply orthodontic wax to any sharp edges
  • If the sore doesn’t heal within a few days or becomes increasingly painful, give us a call

When to Call Our Office

While some issues can be managed at home temporarily, you should contact Becker Orthodontics if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent pain that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter medication
  • A bracket or wire that you can’t secure or make comfortable with wax
  • Trauma to your mouth, teeth, or face
  • Damage to your appliances that could affect your treatment
  • Any concern that makes you unsure about what to do

Call or text us at (610) 935-1547 – our team will assess your situation and schedule an appointment if needed. We prioritize emergency cases and will do our best to see you the same day.

How We Handle Orthodontic Emergencies

When you come to Becker Orthodontics with an emergency, we make every effort to see you the same day. Our team will assess your situation over the phone and schedule you promptly. During your visit, Dr. Becker will examine the issue, explain what happened, and provide an effective solution to get you back on track. Whether it’s repairing a broken bracket, trimming a poking wire, or replacing damaged appliances, we’ll resolve your concern quickly and give you guidance on preventing future issues.

Tips to Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies

Being mindful of what you eat can significantly reduce your risk of emergencies. Avoid hard foods like ice and nuts, sticky foods like caramel and gum, and crunchy snacks like popcorn. Cut foods like apples and sandwiches into smaller pieces instead of biting directly into them. If you play sports, always wear a mouthguard to protect your braces. Avoid chewing on pens or pencils, maintain good oral hygiene, and attend all scheduled appointments. Following these simple guidelines will help keep your treatment on track and prevent most common orthodontic issues.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Emergencies
Are orthodontic emergencies common?

Most patients go through treatment without any major emergencies. Minor issues like loose brackets or poking wires can happen occasionally but are easily fixed.

Will a broken bracket delay my treatment?

One broken bracket typically won’t cause significant delays if repaired promptly. However, multiple breaks or ignoring the issue can extend your treatment time.

Can I fix a poking wire myself?

You can try repositioning it gently with a clean eraser or cover it with wax for temporary relief. However, it’s best to have Dr. Becker properly address it to prevent future issues.

What if I have an emergency after office hours?

Call our office at (610) 935-1547. If it’s a true emergency involving severe pain or trauma, leave a message and we’ll respond as quickly as possible. For less urgent issues, temporary home care can usually help until we can see you.

Does orthodontic wax really help?

Yes! Orthodontic wax is a simple but effective tool for covering brackets or wires that are causing irritation. We’ll provide you with wax and show you how to use it.

Will my insurance cover emergency orthodontic visits?

Emergency care is typically included as part of your overall orthodontic treatment plan. Contact our office if you have specific questions about your coverage.
