Clear (Essix) Retainers at Becker Orthodontics
The clear retainer is the workhorse of modern retention. After braces or aligners come off, a thin transparent tray keeps every tooth in its new position while staying practically invisible at work, at school, and in photos. Essix retainers are the most widely used type in American orthodontics, and they are the standard first retainer we prescribe after most treatments at Becker Orthodontics.
Every Essix retainer we deliver is made from a digital scan of your teeth, formed on-site at our own offices. No outside lab, no two-week wait.
What Is an Essix Retainer?
An Essix retainer is a vacuum-formed tray made from a single sheet of medical-grade clear plastic, heated and molded over an exact model of your teeth. Orthodontist John Sheridan introduced the design in 1993 as a discreet alternative to wire-and-acrylic retainers, and it has dominated retention ever since.
The tray hugs each tooth to a fraction of a millimeter, which is why a well-made clear retainer feels secure without any adjusting, tightening, or visible hardware. It looks nearly identical to a clear aligner, with one core difference: an aligner moves teeth, while a retainer holds them still.
Can Clear Retainers Straighten Teeth?
No, and any product promising otherwise deserves skepticism. Retainers are passive appliances molded to your current alignment, so they preserve position rather than change it. If your teeth have already shifted and you want them back where they were, a short course of clear aligner treatment moves them first, and a fresh retainer holds the recovered result. Dr. Becker will tell you at a free consultation which of the two you actually need.
Clear Retainers vs Other Retainer Types
Clear trays are the most popular choice, and still a choice among several. Here is how the options we offer compare:
| Type | Visibility | Typical lifespan | Typical cost |
| Clear (Essix) | Nearly invisible | 1 to 3 years | $100 to $300 per set |
| Hawley (wire and acrylic) | Visible front wire | 5 to 10 years | $150 to $350 |
| Permanent (bonded) | Hidden behind teeth | 5 to 10+ years | $250 to $500 per arch |
| Vivera (Invisalign brand) | Nearly invisible | Several years per set of four | $400 to $1,000 per set |
Essix wins on discretion, comfort, and upfront price. Hawley wins on durability, and Vivera adds built-in backups for patients who want spares. You can compare replacement options in detail on our retainer replacement page, and switching types at replacement time is always an option.
